Micah Miller scored with 6:42 remaining in double overtime to lift Grand Rapids past Duluth East, 3-2, Thursday at Amsoil Arena in Duluth. After a scoreless eight-minute opening overtime period, Miller's goal came just more than 10 minutes into the second overtime, in the game's 69th minute. Blake McLaughlin opened the scoring for Grand Rapids with a goal at 4:21 in the first period. Duluth East answered with a power play goal from Ryder Donovan to tie the game at 8:26 in the first. Michael Heitkamp put the Thunderhawks up, 2-1, scoring 55 seconds into the second period. Duluth East then tied the game at 12:28 in the second on a goal from Garret Worth. Zach Stejskal had 45 saves for Grand Rapids and Duluth East's Kirk Meierhoff had 45. It's the second straight section title for the Thunderhawks, which defeated the Greyhounds, 6-5, in last year's final. Grand Rapids (20-7-1) will open at the state tournament Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
