The Results
On September 21st, 2023, Narya was on her way to her 6-year well-child check, and, she mentioned to Mom that she wanted an x-ray. An x-ray? There’s nothing wrong, Mom thought and said, “You don’t need one of those!” Things changed after that comment because, during her checkup, her pediatrician noticed that Narya had a curvature in her spine and ordered an x-ray. The x-ray went great, but the results proved to all of us that a journey was about to start.
Narya underwent an MRI at St. Mary’s in Duluth, where, as you can see from the picture, her curvature was significant. As we waited for the results, it was important to ensure the curvature didn’t worsen, so Narya was fitted for a brace that she wears 16 hours a day.
On December 13th, our next referral brought us to Gilette’s Children’s Hospital in St. Paul, where the diagnosis of Chiari Malformation became part of our vocabulary. This diagnosis has come as a shock not only in the words, but what in the world is this, and why oh why must it be happening to our Narya?
Our visit to Gilette’s was an all-day affair, and we decided to have additional X-rays and MRIs to ensure there were no more surprises. The results confirm that Narya will have to undergo a surgery called a duraplasty. It’s more invasive but significantly reduces the chances of needing another surgery. Our girl is a warrior!
