Grand Rapids Hockey vs Elk River-Sec 7AA Semis-Rapids Scores 5 Goals in 3rd Period-Win-5 to 3- Grand Rapids rallied from a 2-0 third period deficit to defeat Elk River/Zimmerman, 5-3, in the Section 7AA semifinals at Amsoil Arena in Duluth Saturday. The No, 1 seeded Elks carried a 2-0 advantage into the final frame before the Thunderhawks starter their rally. A power play goal from Gavin Hain at 6:48 in the third cut Elk River/Zimmerman’’s lead in half. Then 11 seconds later, Blake McLaughlin sailed a high, outside shot past Elks goalie Ben Meyers to tie the game, 2-2. The Elks responded with just under four minutes remaining with a goal from Jack Perbix to go back in front, 3-2. However, 24 seconds later Hain answered with a quick goal to tie the game, 3-3. Less than a minute later, the Thunderhawks took the lead on another score from Hain with 2:28 remaining. The Elks pulled Meyers with a minute to go, but Grand Rapids continued to clear the puck and added an empty net goal from Jack Burnson to seal the win with 16 seconds remaining. Elk River/Zimmerman opened the scoring with a power play goal from Perbix at 3:53 in the first period. The Elks took their 2-0 lead at 5:20 in the second period on a goal from Connor Bizal. Zach Stejskal had 38 saves for Grand Rapids and Meyers had 27. Grand Rapids, the No. 4 seed in the section will play No. 2 Duluth East in the finals back at Amsoil at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The Greyhounds defeated No. 3 Cloquet-Esko-Carlton, 1-0, in the other semifinal.
